Did you know?

Souvlaki had its origin in Greece, specifically in the city of Athens, but it became popular in countries such as Egypt during the Greek conquest.

Today, suvlakis are on everyone’s lips. They are the fashionable street food in Madrid and in most European cities, but what do you really know about suvlakis?

At Suvlakeria Griega Egeo we have been offering the best suvlakis in Madrid to our clients for years and that is why we want to share with you a story that goes back very, very far …

What are souvlakis?

The name derives from Souvla, which means skewer in Greek and souvlaki is its diminutive.

It is a very popular street food in Greece. These are skewers of pieces of pork (although they can also be chicken or lamb) marinated with oregano, lemon and olive oil, cooked on the grill.

They are eaten alone as a snack although they can also be a more complete meal if they are accompanied with vegetables, tzatziki, bread, potatoes or rice.

Souvlaki is usually made with pork, lamb, beef and chicken, and as we mentioned, currently it is also possible to find it from fish and even vegetarians.

Although it is a recipe that dates back to ancient Greece, today it is still one of the most popular traditional dishes for its simplicity and versatility.

origins

The origin of the suvlakis is found in ancient Greek culture.

Proof of this are the archaeological finds from excavations in Santorini, where sets of stone cooking supports used before the 17th century BC were unearthed in which there are pairs of indentations that were probably used to hold the skewers.

Likewise, the suvlakis are mentioned in some works by Aristophanes, Xenophon, Aristotle, and other classical authors.

And now that we have explained more about the origin of the suvlakis, do you dare to be part of history?
